WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today applauded the U.S. Department of Labor's decision certifying that employees of Vernon textile manufacturer Amerbelle are eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA). Under the TAA program, workers whose employment is adversely affected by increased imports are eligible for reemployment services to help them train for and find new jobs. Workers may also be eligible for relocation allowances, income support and other reemployment services.

Joe Courtney preventing the interest rate on subsidized Stafford student loans from doubling from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent. The provision was adopted as part of the Highway Bill, which the House passed by a vote of 373-52.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today announced that the City of Norwich has secured $500,000 in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Justice's COPS Hiring Program (CHP). The funding will be used by the Norwich Police Department to hire four new police officers. The 2012 program requires that all new officers hired under the grant must be military veterans who have served at least 180 days of active military service, any part of which occurred on or after September 11, 2001.

Washington, DC—The Connecticut Congressional delegation voiced its support today for a $75 million federal loan the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) awarded to HealthyCT. The loan enables HealthyCT to launch a new non-profit, consumer-driven health insurance company, known as a Consumer Operated and Oriented Plan, or CO-OP. Because HealthyCT is a non-profit, any profit will be invested back into the plan, keeping premiums affordable and ensuring access to quality, affordable health care for people across Connecticut.
