Congressman praises boost to local economy, affirmation of century-old relationship between New London and the Coast Guard Academy

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today released the following statement after the announcement of the new location for the National Coast Guard Museum:

“Today’s announcement is the culmination of years of hard work and dedication to the cause of cementing the century-old relationship between New London and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and honoring the rich history of the Coast Guard. As the only service without a national museum to celebrate and promote its history, the Coast Guard has waited too long for this day. The museum will ensure that the Coast Guard’s tireless contributions to the safety of our shorelines are on display for all to see.

“In addition to telling the Coast Guard’s story, the museum will also provide a boost to New London’s economy, giving travelers another great reason to spend time in eastern Connecticut. We owe tremendous thanks to the leadership of Gov. Dannel Malloy, Jim Coleman, Adm. Robert Papp, Adm. Thad Allen (ret.), members of the Connecticut Congressional delegation, past and present, and Mayor Finizio. Today is a proud and exciting day for New London, Connecticut, and the Coast Guard.”

Congressman Courtney is the co-chairman of the bipartisan House Coast Guard Caucus.
