WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Joe Courtney today released the following statement after the United States Supreme Court voted to uphold the Affordable Care Act:

"Today's ruling is a landmark moment in the fight for stable, secure health coverage for all Americans. Congress debated, the Supreme Court decided, and now the implementation of the Affordable Care Act can move forward.


June 25, 2012

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today announced that the City of Norwich has secured $500,000 in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Justice's COPS Hiring Program (CHP). The funding will be used by the Norwich Police Department to hire four new police officers. The 2012 program requires that all new officers hired under the grant must be military veterans who have served at least 180 days of active military service, any part of which occurred on or after September 11, 2001.

WASHINGTON, DC – With just five days remaining to prevent the interest rate on subsidized Stafford student loans from doubling from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent, Senators Joe Lieberman and Richard Blumenthal, and Representatives, Joe Courtney, Rosa DeLauro, John Larson, Chris Murphy and Jim Himes today again reiterated calls for swift action to prevent the rate increase.

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Joe Courtney today applauded new data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) showing that 137,452 families in Connecticut will receive $12,949,130 in rebates from their health insurance companies because of the Affordable Care Act's Medical Loss Ratio (MLR).

Washington, DC—The Connecticut Congressional delegation voiced its support today for a $75 million federal loan the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) awarded to HealthyCT. The loan enables HealthyCT to launch a new non-profit, consumer-driven health insurance company, known as a Consumer Operated and Oriented Plan, or CO-OP. Because HealthyCT is a non-profit, any profit will be invested back into the plan, keeping premiums affordable and ensuring access to quality, affordable health care for people across Connecticut.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today invited eastern Connecticut job seekers to participate in the career fair he is hosting on Wednesday, June 13, at the Norwich Holiday Inn between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. The Norwich career fair is the third such fair Courtney is hosting this year; it is being co-hosted by the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut, The Eastern Connecticut Workforce Investment Board (EWIB) and CT Works.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney, a member of the House Armed Services Committee and co-chairman of the Congressional Shipbuilding Conference, today represented Connecticut at the commissioning of the USS Mississippi - the Navy's newest Virginia-class submarine - in Pascagoula, Miss. The submarine was constructed at Groton-based Electric Boat, and was completed a year ahead of schedule and $65 million under budget.

WASHINGTON, DC — The Connecticut Congressional Delegation responded today to the joint Federal Energy Regulatory Commission/North America Electric Reliability Corporation report into the causes and unacceptable response of Connecticut Light & Power and its parent company, Northeast Utilities, to last October's snowstorm that left more than two million households without power, including over 850,000 in Connecticut. The delegation called for the investigation last year.

WASHINGTON, DC – Senators Joe Lieberman and Richard Blumenthal and Congressman Joe Courtney today applauded the announcement from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that the Town of Preston secured $800,000 in competitive grants to assess and clean up brownfield sites at the former Norwich Hospital property on Route 12. A $200,000 assessment grant will be used to investigate hazardous substances in soils and building materials and to develop cleanup plans and support community involvement activities.
