Courtney announces Education and Workforce Committee hearing on school safety

February 22, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today announced that the House Education and Workforce Committee will next Wednesday hold a hearing on school safety. Courtney, who returned to the committee at the beginning of the 113th Congress, wrote to Chairman John Kline and Ranking Member George Miller in December after the Newtown shooting, calling on the committee to make school safety a priority over the next two years.

"After tragic shootings on school grounds in Colorado, Virginia and Newtown, Connecticut, it is clear that we must sharpen our focus on the safety of our students and teachers," Courtney said. "I applaud Chairman Kline and Ranking Member Miller's quick attention to this critical issue, and I look forward to a productive dialogue on school safety. I hope that Wednesday's hearing is just the beginning of a larger conversation, and that the committee keeps its focus on finding solutions to keep students and teachers safe."

Wednesday's hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. in room 2175 of the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, D.C.

"Schools must be safe places for all students to learn without fear of violence," said Education and Workforce Ranking Member Rep. George Miller. "I want to thank Rep. Courtney for his tireless commitment to keeping our young people safe while at school and I appreciate all the hard work he has done on this issue and on this hearing."
