WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today announced that the Town of Putnam secured a $46,548 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services's (HHS) Center for Substance Abuse Prevention to help the Town combat underage drinking. The competitively-secured funding will be used to pay for the Putnam Police Department's shoulder-tap program and increased liquor establishment compliance checks to ensure that businesses are not selling alcohol to minors.

The suspension follows the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) February rejection of Rhode Island's request. After Rhode Island applied for the pilot program last year, Congressman Courtney wrote to Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood expressing his strong opposition to and serious concerns about the proposal.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today announced that the Towns of Enfield and Vernon will receive $4,148,503 and $2,184,998, respectively, from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to pay for costs incurred from debris removal as a result of October 2011. The funds will be delivered to the State of Connecticut, and will be distributed to the Towns in October.
