WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today released the following statement after UConn head basketball coach Jim Calhoun announced his retirement:

"Coach Calhoun's footprint in Connecticut will last for ages. His three national championships transformed our state's self image into one of a winner, and his decades of acts of charity and kindness to those in need have touched countless lives. Most recently, he also led the charge for reform of the basketball program's academic system, which has already produced dramatic improvement in the past two years.

WASHINGTON, DC – At a hearing of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, Congressman Joe Courtney elicited testimony from Assistant Secretary of the Navy Sean Stackley affirming that the Fiscal Year 2013 Continuing Resolution (CR) being considered by the Congress would in fact continue to fully fund continued doubled submarine production at Electric Boat. The 2013 CR, which is expected to be passed in the House tomorrow, would fund the government for six months through March 2013.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today announced that the CT Parent Advocacy Center in Niantic secured an $828,108 grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The CT Parent Advocacy Center will use the competitive funding to provide information and resources to parents of children with the full range of disabilities (birth to age 26).

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today applauded the completion and official opening of the new indoor small arms range at SUBASE New London. In 2008, Congressman Courtney secured $11 million to build the range as part of the Consolidated Security, Disaster Assistance, and Continuing Appropriations Act, 2009. Prior to Congressman Courtney securing the funding, the Navy did not plan to fund the project until 2013.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today announced that Storrs-based Biorasis Inc. secured a $486,406 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Biorasis will use the competitive grant funding to develop a wireless, self-calibrating, needle implantable miniaturized (0.5 x 0.5 x 5 mm) sensor for continuous glucose monitoring for Diabetics, which eliminates the need for frequent, external finger-pricking

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today announced that the Town of Putnam secured a $46,548 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services's (HHS) Center for Substance Abuse Prevention to help the Town combat underage drinking. The competitively-secured funding will be used to pay for the Putnam Police Department's shoulder-tap program and increased liquor establishment compliance checks to ensure that businesses are not selling alcohol to minors.

WASHINGTON, DC – Senator Richard Blumenthal and Congressman Joe Courtney today applauded the U.S. Navy's decision to move forward on repair of the USS MIAMI, a Groton-based attack submarine that was damaged in a fire May 23 while undergoing an overhaul at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Maine. During his meeting with Blumenthal and Courtney at SUBASE New London earlier today, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jon Greenert shared that the repair project will be a joint effort between Electric Boat and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard personnel and facilities.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today applauded the State of Rhode Island's decision to suspend a proposal to place tolls on I-95 just across the border from North Stonington. The suspension follows the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) February rejection of Rhode Island's request. After Rhode Island applied for the pilot program last year, Congressman Courtney wrote to Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood expressing his strong opposition to and serious concerns about the proposal.
