NORWICH—Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-2) and the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Export Assistance Center in Middletown brought together representatives from Genesee and Wyoming and Providence and Worcester Railroad along with a dozen eastern Connecticut companies and economic development officials from the region to discuss ways to integrate freight rail into the firm’s business strategies.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-2) released the following statement after voting in favor of the Senate’s bill to fully fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for the 2015 fiscal year:
“Speaker Boehner and House Republican leadership hopefully learned an important lesson today: the American people will not tolerate the hostage-taking strategies extremists in the House Republican caucus have repeatedly employed over the last four years to advance policies they cannot enact through regular order.

“I attended today’s Joint Address by Prime Minister Netanyahu, because my unyielding support for the partnership between the United States and the State of Israel trumps the misguided, partisan process which led to today’s speech. Nonetheless, the friendship and alliance between the United States and Israel transcends political parties and partisan political gamesmanship.

Washington, D.C.—Moments ago, the Senate passed a “clean” full-year appropriations bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security, sending the legislation to the House.
Despite this bipartisan effort in the Senate, House Republicans announced that they would refuse to pass this full-year appropriations bill to fund DHS, and instead bring up a bill to pass a three week stopgap funding measure, with no plan in place to move forward with a full appropriations bill within that time frame.

Thank you, Mr. Chairman. This is my first public hearing as ranking member, and I am looking forward to working with you and our colleagues on the panel to continue the bipartisan and hands-on tradition of this subcommittee.

In addition to welcoming our returning members back to the subcommittee, I would like to highlight three new members on our side of the aisle who I think will make excellent contributions to our work this session: Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, Gwen Graham of Florida, and Seth Moulton of Massachusetts.

NORWICH, CT—Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-2) and Bryan Hurlburt, State Executive Director of the Farm Service Agency, visited Bahler Farms in Ellington to highlight the high enrollment rate in the new Dairy Margin Protection Program among dairy farms in Connecticut.
“The new Dairy Margin Protection Program—which I supported during the crafting of the 2014 Farm Bill—provides flexible insurance coverage for our region’s dairy farms when prices dip,” Courtney said.
