WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney and the U.S. House of Representatives today passed the 2014 National Defense Authorization Act, by a vote of 350 to 69. The bill supports continued two-a-year production of Virginia Class Submarines, ongoing development of the Ohio Replacement Program (ORP) and denies a request for a new base closing round.

U.S. Rep. Joseph D. Courtney, D- 2nd District, has joined a colleague from California in calling for a federal investigation of alleged misconduct by doctors and lawyers said to be working on behalf of the coal industry. The request to the U.S. Labor Department by Courtney and Rep. George Miller, a California Democrat, follows a yearlong probe of a benefits program for coal miners with pneumoconiosis, or black lung disease, by ABC News and the Center for Public Integrity, a nonprofit watchdog group in Washington, D.C. The investigation alleged that doctors and lawyers used medically and ethically questionable tactics to defeat the claims of minors with the disease, according to the congressmen.

Electric Boat has won a $25.7 million contract to perform maintenance work on the USS Providence. The work on the Los Angeles-class attack submarine was originally expected to be done at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Maine. But it was moved to Groton's Electric Boat following the cancellation of repair work planned for the fire-damaged USS Miami.

NEW HAVEN, CT—Connecticut’s delegation to the U.S. House of Representatives today advocated for Sikorsky’s world-class helicopters in a letter to the Norwegian Ambassador. Sikorsky was recently removed from the competitive bidding process on a contract by the Norwegian government, but Norway has had a change in government since that initial decision was made.

The Coventry High School band, at the request of U.S Rep Joe Courtney, D-2nd District, has been invited to participate in the 2014 National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C. The catch? The band needs help raising almost $100,000 to go on the trip. Fundraising efforts have already begun, with an added boost from the town council late last month. The council unanimously approved $4,800 to ensure all of the band members have the opportunity to go. The funds will come from the town council’s 1.5percent fund, a pool of cash budgeted at the disposal of the council for small, one-shot expenditures. It is equal to 1.5-percent of the town’s taxable levy.
