Courtney Welcomes New Undersea Warfighting Development Center at Submarine Base New London

June 9, 2015

Norwich, CT – Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-2) today issued the following statement on the Navy’s announcement of the establishment of a new Undersea Warfighting Development Center at U.S. Naval Submarine Base New London. The new center has command authority over two detachments of the center, located in San Diego, California and Norfolk, Virginia.

“The establishment of this command reflects the central and vital role that Submarine Base New London continues to serve in our nation’s security, and is the natural progression of the significant federal investments in the base we have worked for over the past eight years,” Congressman Courtney said. “Our region and the base have long been recognized as the center of excellence for undersea training, support and development for the Navy, and there is no better place to house the new Undersea Warfighting Development Center. This center will be at the forefront as our undersea platforms and anti-submarine warfare tactics play an increasingly central part in our nation’s security strategy.”

The establishment of the center expands the mission of SUBASE New London and adds 52 billets, including 14 officers, 19 enlisted sailors, and 19 civilians to support the training of Navy forces in advanced tactics, techniques and procedures for Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW). The mission of the center includes training and development in advanced Tactics, Techniques and Procedures, operational expertise to support Strike Group Commanders, Numbered Fleet Commanders, Navy Component Commanders and Combatant Commanders, and providing subject matter expertise in ASW to the fleet.
