WASHINGTON, D.C.—Last night, Congressman Joe Courtney joined a unanimous bipartisan majority on the House Armed Services Committee in voting 61-0 to pass the FY2015 National Defense Authorization Act. The bill fully supports continued investment in programs critical to Connecticut’s economy and industrial base. Among its provisions, which are detailed below, the bill supports continued two-a-year production of Virginia Class Submarines, ongoing development of the Ohio Replacement Program (ORP) and denies a request for a new Base Realignment and Closure round (BRAC).

Norwich—Today Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-2), a member of the House Agriculture Committee, announced more than $395,000 for Connecticut farmers through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Specialty Crop Block Grant Program. Administered by USDA’s Agriculture Marketing Service, the program enhances markets and production for specialty crops. Previously, Connecticut has utilized these funds for a range of projects from increasing traffic at Connecticut orchards to Connecticut-Grown brand research and shared-use processing facilities and equipment.
Norwich, CT—Today Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal and Congressman Joe Courtney announced a federal grant and loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development program to the town of Putnam, Connecticut. The $4.8 million grant and $10.6 million loan, funded by the 2014 Farm Bill’s Rural Development title, will be used to install nearly 43,000 feet of new water main, reline more than 9,000 feet of water main, and rehabilitate the Richmond Hill Water Storage Tank. Additionally, 697 lateral connections, 88 fire hydrants and 180 gate valves will be replaced.
WASHINGTON—Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-2) announced that two eastern Connecticut cultural gems, the Goodspeed Opera House and the Mystic Ballet, were awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. The $30,000 grant to the Goodspeed Opera House will support a new production of Irving Berlin’s “Holiday Inn,” which will run from September 19 to November 30 this year.

WASHINGTON, DC– According to new data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), 12,262 eastern Connecticut Medicare beneficiaries saved $14,474,351 on prescription drugs because of the Affordable Care Act in 2013. The number already dwarfs the $10,849,307 eastern Connecticut seniors saved in 2012, and it will continue to grow each year until the Part D donut hole is completely phased out in 2020.
