WASHINGTON—Last night, the Senate approved a House-passed legislative package of “tax extenders” for 2014, sending the bill to President Obama for his signature. Today, Congressman Joe Courtney highlighted the inclusion of a provision that protects struggling homeowners from severe tax penalties after a short sale, mortgage restructuring or foreclosure. Without renewal of the Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act, distressed homeowners would have incurred income taxes on mortgage debt forgiven in such a transaction—an expensive proposition for families already facing financial distress.

WASHINGTON—Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-2) released 2014 totals showing that constituent casework performed by his office in 2014 saved or returned $2,431,624 to eastern Connecticut residents. Courtney's office helped residents receive funds and benefits owed to them by resolving IRS disputes, VA benefit issues, mortgage problems, complications with Social Security benefits, and other issues.

WASHINGTON—Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-2) issued the following statement after reports of alleged criminal activity aboard the USS Wyoming, an Ohio Class submarine homeported at Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base. The Navy is currently investigating allegations that a male sailor videotaped women officers in a shower area of the ship.

“I am very distributed by these reports. The women and men of the submarine force deserve better from their fellow sailors. I am confident the Navy will fully investigate these allegations and hold anyone involved fully accountable.
