Courtney Statement on Vote to Approve Agreement to Limit Iran's Nuclear Program

September 11, 2015

WASHINGTON—Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-2) released the following statement after casting his vote to approve the agreement to limit Iran's nuclear program:

"The agreement before us today is an important step towards the goal of preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. In addition to providing unprecedented access for IAEA inspectors, significantly reducing Iran's stockpile of fissile material, and enacting strong tools to respond to any violations, approval of the agreement also ensures that the international coalition that brought Iran to the table to agree to limits to its nuclear program remains a united front against the regime's other efforts to destabilize the region.

“As the P5+1 and the IAEA move forward to implement this agreement, I look forward to participating in strict congressional oversight to ensure that Iran adheres by the letter to the agreement. In conjunction with the international community, the U.S. will be focused like a laser on Iran's actions in the wake of the agreement and stands ready to participate in any international response that may be necessary."

Courtney previously announced his support for the agreement in August, detailing his reasoning in that statement.
