This project has been a long time coming, and when it’s completed, it will greatly expand our freight capacity throughout eastern Connecticut and at the Port of New London. The federal TIGER funding I helped secure proved critical in the effort to leverage matching funds from private industry to get this project underway. These upgrades will allow the Port of New London to expand the amount of freight cargo that can be shipped in and sent out by rail across the region. This development is bound to expand industry and create new jobs across eastern Connecticut as shipping continues to grow.

“We respectfully write regarding your decision to remove the House chaplain without cause from his office prior to his term’s expiration,” wrote the members of Congress in their letter to Ryan. “Since the election of Reverend William Linn in 1789, the Chaplain of the House of Representatives has provided pastoral counseling to individuals who serve in and support our institution. The House chaplain is vested with a special mission, including the free exercise of religion, the integrity of which must be safeguarded."

“As states continue to face mounting deaths caused by drug addiction and overdoses, we need spend our resources wisely by targeting the areas with the highest number of deaths,” said Courtney. “While this is a crisis that affects every part of our country, whether it’s rural, suburban or urban, some areas of our country such New England have been particularly hard hit by addiction and overdose deaths. I am urging the administration to target the limited resources we currently have available at the federal level to assist those communities that have been most heavily impacted by the costs of the prescription opioid and heroin epidemic.”

“Each day, millions of Americans head to work to earn a living and support their family and none of them expect to be injured or killed while doing their job. Our resolution demonstrating support for Workers Memorial Day honors those that have been hurt or killed, and bring attention to workplace safety, calling Congress to action to help prevent these tragedies from occurring in the future,” said Courtney.

Over the years, our subcommittee has earned a stellar record of constructively influencing the debate about our nation’s priorities on, above and below the seas. For example, the 2018 appropriations process that concluded on March 23rd with passage of the final omnibus in many ways reflected the bipartisan input and priorities for ships, aircraft, and capabilities that were set here in our subcommittee last year.

“Bashar al-Assad's criminal chemical weapons attacks against the Syrian people requires both an effective response and a comprehensive strategy," said Courtney. "Clearly, our naval forces executed a precise, laser-focused strike with great competence and skill, and which Secretary of Defense Mattis described as limited. From this point on, the Trump administration needs to consult with Congress on what the overall strategy in Syria will be, a question that is far from clear and one I raised with the Secretary this past Wednesday during a hearing of the House Armed Services Committee.”

Ernie first contacted my office in the summer of 2015 to request assistance with obtaining Korean Ambassador for Peace Medals for local Korean War veterans. I was happy to work with him on this effort, and since that time, we have presented nearly 200 of these medals to veterans across the Second Congressional District.
