Despite the federal government lowering a tariff affecting U.S. newspapers, local stakeholders and public officials would like to see the border tax eliminated altogether.
Last week, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross announced final determinations in the antidumping duty and countervailing duty investigations of imports of uncoated groundwood paper, also known as newsprint, from Canada resulting in a reduction on the tariff, previously capped at 22.16 percent to a rate capped at 16.88 percent.

After a six-week cross-country motorcycle ride, Andover resident Gerry Wright has more than mileage to show for his effort.
Wright rode more than 10,000 miles throughout May and June to raise awareness of the diseases many veterans suffer from because of their exposure to Agent Orange during their service in the Vietnam War.

"Homeowners in more than three dozen towns in north central and northeast Connecticut have reported that their home foundations are failing due to the mineral pyrrhotite that could affect up to 35,000 homes in the area. That is why it is critical to make sure that all municipal, state, federal and private sector measures are taken to address this catastrophe. This week was another small step to help our constituents as two amendments passed in the House of Representatives."

Each year, as May ends and we prepare to welcome another summer season, our nation takes a moment to pause and remember the fallen men and women who gave their lives while defending our freedom. Memorial Day serves as a solemn reminder to the American people of the sacrifice made by the members of our Armed Forces and their families.
In Southeastern Connecticut, Memorial Day carries a special meaning since it is home to Naval Submarine Base New London, the oldest submarine base in the country. Sailors from the base have served in every major conflict dating from the first World War to the present time. Our submarine force played a particularly significant role in our nation’s victory during World War II.

“While Congressman Larson and I originally announced that the IRS was going to make this tax relief available late last year, many people are still just learning about the program and the fact that it will be available until 2021,” said Courtney. “Local residents should be aware that the additional three years afforded under this updated guidance we received in February will provide critical time for to make foundation repairs and secure federal tax relief. “Today is a special day in southeastern Connecticut as we mark the 150th anniversary of the creation of the Navy installation that would become Naval Submarine Base New London,” said Courtney. “On this date in 1868, the state of Connecticut and the city of New London conveyed a deed of gift to the U.S. Navy that was only 5,200 feet long and 700 feet wide. Over time, that small tract of land along the Thames River has grown in size and stature as it became the home to the ‘first and finest’ submarine base."
