Courtney, Blumenthal, Murphy Announce More Than $250,00 Grant to Enhance Safety and Operations for New London Fire Department
(Norwich, CT) – Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-2), Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) announced a grant award from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFG) in the amount of $251,799 to the New London Fire Department. The grant, awarded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security/FEMA Region I, will allow the station to enhance operations and safety specifically purchasing protective gear, washers and dryers, and technical rescue training.
“It is critical that the federal government demonstrate its unwavering support for the safety and operations of our first responders who have dedicated their lives to protecting our communities,” said the delegation members. “This grant funding is excellent news for the New London Fire Department, which oversees one of the most densely populated municipalities in eastern Connecticut. The essential training and improved equipment that this funding will support serves not only the department, but the community at large. We applaud New London Mayor Michael Passero and Fire Chief Henry Kidd for their focused efforts and collaboration with our offices that resulted in this critical funding.”
Michael Passero, Mayor of New London, said, “I am very pleased that the New London Fire Department has been awarded this critical funding through the federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program to support the work of our first responders. With our economic recovery in full swing and a thriving local housing market, it is critical that our local firefighters have the equipment and support they need to protect the public. I would like to thank Congressman Courtney, and Senators Blumenthal and Murphy for supporting our grant application and advocating on behalf of our city to obtain this award.”
Henry Kydd, Jr., Fire Chief for the New London Fire Department, said, “This grant funding will help us purchase vital equipment and training our firefighters rely on. Federal grants like this help to relieve some of the economic burdens locally while providing an enormous benefit to our community.”
Funding from the AFG program will be used by the New London Fire Department to provide its personnel with the Rescue Technician “Core” Program training provided by the Connecticut Fire Academy, to better prepare the firefighters to handle challenges and unexpected situations as they work to save lives. Additionally, the funding will support much needed improved emergency response equipment, personal protective equipment as well as several key upgrades for emergency response vehicles.
Courtney, Blumenthal, and Murphy supported this application and have been working with the Department since 2015 to secure this critical funding. The AFG program supports the health and safety of first responders and provides the necessary tools for departments to successfully execute their public mission.
