November 9, 2011

WASHINGTON, DC –Senators Joe Lieberman and Richard Blumenthal and Congressman Joe Courtney today announced that Groton-based Electric Boat (EB) has secured a $21.1 million contract from the U.S. Navy to perform reactor-plant planning yard services for nuclear submarines. If all options are exercised and funded, the contract's total value could reach $121.2 million through 2016.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today applauded Groton-based Electric Boat (EB) as construction began on a second Virginia-Class submarine. Fiscal Year 2011 marks the first time in 22 years that the Navy has built two submarines in the same fiscal year.

Washington, D.C.Six members of the Connecticut Congressional Delegation called for an investigation today into the response of Connecticut Light & Power and its parent company, Northeast Utilities, to the October 29 storm that left more than 2 million households without power, including over 850,000 in Connecticut. Six days later, there are still approximately 300,000 without power in the state.

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representatives Joe Courtney (D-CT) and Tom Cole (R-OK) today sent a letter to the Super Committee urging its members to oppose new taxes on employer-sponsored health benefits. The bipartisan letter, which is signed by 160 members, asks the Committee not to cap or phase out the tax exemption for employer-sponsored health coverage. Eliminating the tax exemption for employer-sponsored care would expose the benefits to taxation for the first time in more than six decades.

HARTFORD – The Connecticut Congressional Delegation announced today that additional utility crews are being made available to Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P) from around the country to aid in ongoing storm recovery efforts.

At the urging of Governor Dannel Malloy and the Delegation, the Department of Energy coordinated with the American Public Power Association (APPA), which arranged for additional crews to be redirected from places like New Jersey and Massachusetts to help Connecticut.

WASHINGTON – The Connecticut delegation sought additional federal aid for the state in a letter sent Wednesday to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. Federal aid began flowing to Connecticut earlier this week after the President declared a state of emergency as a result of an unusually powerful autumn snowstorm that caused extensive damage and left more than 800,000 customers without power.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today announced that Groton-based Electric Boat secured a $91,151,493 contract modification from the U.S. Navy to develop and update design drawings, and evaluate new technology for Virginia-Class submarines. Ninety-one percent of the work will be performed at Groton, with the remainder completed at Newport News, Quonset, and Newport. According to the Navy, work is expected to be completed by September of 2012. The contract will be supported by EB's engineering and design operation, which includes more than 3,000 employees.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today applauded new initiatives by President Obama to help students repay their federal student loans. The initiatives include a new income-based repayment plan, which will allow borrowers to cap their student loan payments at 10 percent of their discretionary income. The Administration's new "Pay As You Earn" proposal will make these benefits available to some borrowers as early as 2012, and will reduce monthly payments for as many as 1.6 million borrowers nationwide.
