WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Courtney and his wife Audrey today began the week-long SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) Challenge, a program of the New London County Food Policy Council, to highlight the challenges facing families that receive SNAP benefits in eastern Connecticut.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today applauded the Social Security Administration's 3.6-percent cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for Social Security beneficiaries in 2012. The COLA will begin with benefits that nearly 55 million Social Security beneficiaries receive in January 2012. Increased payments to more than 8 million SSI beneficiaries will begin on December 30, 2011.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today applauded the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) after it voted to approve position limits on participants in key energy and agricultural commodity contracts. Once implemented, the new limits will reduce the influence of speculators who have driven up gas prices across the country.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today announced that the U.S. Navy awarded Groton-based Electric Boat (EB) a $429.1 million contract modification for design, planning and technical support for the Navy's active nuclear submarines. The contract will be incrementally funded, and 73 percent of its work will be performed at Groton.

The county was declared eligible because it is contiguous to Rhode Island counties that were declared Primary Natural Disaster Areas as a result of Tropical Storm Irene.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) awarded the Connecticut Department of Agriculture $429,936 in Specialty Crop Block Grants (SCBG) to help Connecticut farmers strengthen the market for specialty crops. In all, the Connecticut Department of Agriculture secured nine grants, including: partnering with Wholesome Wave to double the amount of SNAP benefits low income residents are able to use at farmer's markets; and funding to partner with the Connecticut Farm Bureau Association, Inc.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today urged eastern Connecticut residents who were affected by Tropical Storm Irene to apply for disaster assistance, even if they are covered by insurance. According to the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA), more than 4,000 Connecticut residents have already applied for disaster assistance. Officials believe, however, that there may be more disaster-affected individuals who have not applied because they think their damages do not warrant coverage.
