Courtney to Call for Ending Washington Gridlock to Address Connecticut’s Highway & Infrastructure Needs
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressmen Joe Courtney on Wednesday, April 4, at 2 pm will join representatives from Connecticut's transportation construction industry to highlight the need for Washington to end partisan gridlock and for Congress to pass a long term, bipartisan bill to invest in Connecticut's highway and transit priorities.
The 2005 Transportation Authorization law that provides annual funding to states like Connecticut expired in 2009 and has since relied on a series of short-term extensions. Courtney is backing bipartisan legislation passed by the Senate to enact a two-year transportation bill that would sustain Connecticut's current federal transportation funding and provide the certainty that the state, and industry, needs to plan and execute projects. However, House Republicans are insisting on passage of a partisan and controversial bill that would cut Connecticut's funding by over $400 million over the next five years – threatening jobs and economic recovery in our state.
The event will be held at the Route 5 Bridge over Route 190, which has been identified by the Connecticut Department of Transportation as a deficient bridge, underscoring the need for a strong federal transportation law.
WHAT: Courtney to hold press conference calling for urgent action on a long term, bipartisan transportation bill.
WHO: Congressman Joe Courtney;
Don Shubert, President of the Connecticut Construction Industries Association (CCIA)
Representatives of Connecticut's construction industry
WHEN: Wednesday, April 4, at 2 pm
WHERE: Route 5 Bridge over Route 190
GPS: 40 Frankilin Street, Enfield, CT 06082
