One of the strongest supporters of the AUKUS security pact in the US congress has urged “everyone to take a deep breath”, amid growing fears US shipyards won’t have the capacity to provide Australia with nuclear-powered submarines before the nation has the capacity to build them itself.

The news that two key US senators have warned President Joe Biden that the AUKUS agreement under which Australia will buy nuclear-powered submarines could threaten US security by stressing the nation’s submarine industrial base “to breaking point” is problematic for Australia.
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02), Chairman of the House Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee, voted to pass the FY 2023 Consolidated Appropriations Act (H.R. 2617) a bipartisan spending bill that will fund the federal government through September 30, 2023. The bill was passed in the House by a vote of 225-201, and now moves to the President’s desk to be signed into law.
WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02), Chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower and Projection Forces, voted to pass the Fiscal Year 2023 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) (H.R. 7776). The House passed the 2023 NDAA in a bipartisan vote of 350-80, and it will now move on to the Senate for final consideration before being signed into law by the President.
