Continuing Resolution Ensures Columbia Submarine Construction Stays on Track

October 2, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Saturday, Congress passed a bipartisan stop-gap measure that not only averted a catastrophic shutdown, but also included $621 million to continue construction on the USS Wisconsin, a Columbia-class submarine.

“A government shutdown would have had catastrophic consequences on families across the nation and halted progress on construction of the Columbia-class submarine. This would have debilitated our aggressive efforts to replace the retiring Ohio-class submarines with the Columbia-class on schedule and meet the Navy’s fleet requirements.

“Thankfully, the bipartisan stop-gap measure we passed over the weekend not only averted a shutdown, but continued funding for the Columbia submarine construction program at Electric Boat.  The continuing resolution includes $621 million for continuous production of the USS Wisconsin submarine, the second in the Columbia-class. With this funding, Electric Boat’s talented shipbuilders can continue their work and ensure the Wisconsin is delivered on time,” Rep. Joe Courtney said.
