WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today released the following statement after the White House announced a new policy regarding contraceptive coverage. Under the new policy, women will have free preventive care that includes contraceptive services no matter where she works, while also ensuring that if a woman works for religious employers with objections to providing contraceptive services as part of its health plan, the religious employer will not be required to provide contraception coverage.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today announced that Groton's Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department secured a $748,896 grant through the Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program. The grant is a regional victory, and will allow seven fire departments – Poquonnock Bridge, City of Groton, Center of Groton, Old Mystic, Mystic, Noank and Groton Long Point – to improve the radio infrastructure of their dispatch center. The improvements will cover all of Groton and parts of Stonington.

WASHINGTON, DC – According to new data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), eastern Connecticut seniors saved $ 5,001,408 on prescription drugs in 2011 as a result of the Affordable Care Act. Medicare improvements in the Affordable Care Act mean that beneficiaries now automatically receive a 50-percent discount on covered brand-name drugs in the Part D coverage gap, or "donut hole." The amount of this discount will continue to grow until the Part D donut hole is completely phased out in 2020.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today announced that the Old Mystic Fire Department secured a $216,154 grant through the Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program. The funding will be used to for an apparatus bay exhaust ventilation system and a second training trailer for confined-space and technical rescue training.

“Slower Growth in Health Spending” (editorial, Jan. 12) misses the point when it suggests that the Affordable Care Act — a law whose ink was barely dry at the time — had a negligible effect on health care spending in 2009 and 2010. In fact, recent growth trends suggest that the law is particularly effective at reining in Medicare spending, which now makes up 15 percent of the federal budget. It does so with modest changes to provider reimbursements and by introducing efficient preventive care practices in anticipation of accountable care organizations."
