“I fully support the deployment of the USS Lassen to sail within 12 nautical miles of Subi and Mischief reefs. These operations are necessary to uphold maritime law and standards on the high seas, particularly as it relates to artificial islands that receive no claims under international law. Our Navy is uniquely positioned to ensure that no nation be given legal or moral space to make unfounded and excessive maritime claims that could destabilize this already highly contested area or impede the free flow of commerce that the world relies on."

"Today's vote on the budget reconciliation bill was another in a long line of partisan attacks on the Affordable Care Act, a law which is succeeding in expanding access and controlling costs. Instead of focusing on areas of agreement, like my bipartisan bill to repeal the so-called 'Cadillac tax,' GOP leaders have bundled that proposal into a package that includes more tired, partisan attacks on the Affordable Care Act. It's time for Congress to act on areas of bipartisan consensus to improve the health care law, rather than waste time refighting the battles of the past," Courtney said.

"Direct flights to Europe from Bradley Airport will provide a significant economic boon to the Hartford-Springfield region and beyond, strengthen our trade and tourism partnership with Ireland, and open up easier access to all of Europe for tourists and business travelers alike. Connecticut and western Massachusetts have seen a significant uptick in international tourism, and with this development, we will continue to work with our trade partners overseas to build on that trend."

STORRS — U.S. Rep. Joseph Courtney, D-2nd District, said the University of Connecticut was the obvious choice to host a panel discussion on strengthening cybersecurity in the 21st century because of the school’s current and future role in what he termed not only a field of study, but a developing industry.

“In the wake of high-profile data breaches that have exposed the personal information of millions of Americans, consumers and businesses are increasingly focused on securing their data against cyber intrusions and identity theft. I am convening this panel to highlight some of the cutting-edge work happening at UConn’s center of excellence, as well as to inform area businesses of steps they can take to protect their information,” Courtney said.

"Eastern Connecticut lost one of its most devoted public servants today with the passing of my friend and colleague Jenny Contois. As First Selectwoman of Colchester for fifteen years, that town flourished and in 2005 was ranked by CNN/Money Magazine as the 57th best place to live in America. During her seven and a half years as District Director for the Second Congressional District I had the privilege to see up close her smart, caring work for our region. Jenny had one agenda: to help people and their quality of life. She set an example for us all as a wife, mother, grandmother and public official who left a large and deep footprint on the community she loved."

As the Congressman of the Submarine Capital of the World, it’s an honor to welcome our guests here today – particularly First Lady Michelle Obama, Governor Rauner, and to all our friends from the state of Illinois: we are proud to host you in Groton on this special day.

"Today, a bipartisan majority of the House successfully worked together to overcome an obstinate minority of House Republicans by passing the first discharge petition since 2002 to force an up-or-down vote on reauthorization for the U.S. Export-Import Bank. The bank costs nothing to taxpayers—in fact, the bank returns revenue to the U.S. Treasury each year."

“Eastern Connecticut is lucky to have many farms and producers right here in our own backyards,” Courtney said. “The increasing consumer focus on locally-grown food, coupled with this grant that will help Ledge Light Health District promote their farmers’ market to the surrounding communities, will be a benefit to our farms and a boost to healthy eating habits.”

“The conference report on the NDAA is the product of months of hard, bipartisan work on the House Armed Services Committee. This is especially so on the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee, where we have worked to produce a solid bill that invests in the future of our Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force and the important work they do below, on, and above the sea. Of particular importance to eastern Connecticut is the strong investment this bill makes in our undersea priorities, from continued two a year production of the Virginia class submarine to providing additional tools and flexibility for the Navy to build the Ohio Replacement while also preserving its other shipbuilding priorities."
