“I fully support the deployment of the USS Lassen to sail within 12 nautical miles of Subi and Mischief reefs. These operations are necessary to uphold maritime law and standards on the high seas, particularly as it relates to artificial islands that receive no claims under international law. Our Navy is uniquely positioned to ensure that no nation be given legal or moral space to make unfounded and excessive maritime claims that could destabilize this already highly contested area or impede the free flow of commerce that the world relies on."

This is especially so on the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee, where we have worked to produce a solid bill that invests in the future of our Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force and the important work they do below, on, and above the sea. Of particular importance to eastern Connecticut is the strong investment this bill makes in our undersea priorities, from continued two a year production of the Virginia class submarine to providing additional tools and flexibility for the Navy to build the Ohio Replacement while also preserving its other shipbuilding priorities."

That is why the development of the Long Range Strike Bomber, or LRS-B, is integral to defeating those A2/AD challenges, and to advancing our nation’s power projection abilities. I strongly support the LRS-B program, and Congress must do all it can to ensure that it moves forward without delay. While our witnesses will be limited on what they can say about the program in this setting, I look forward to their testimony on the need for retaining our long range strike capabilities and the status of the program to date.

Earlier this month, five Chinese naval warships entered U.S. territorial waters off the coast of Alaska. In acknowledging the transit of these vessels, the United States made clear we viewed this action as well within the rights of China — and any other nation — to conduct innocent passage through the legitimately established territorial seas and nonthreatening military activities within the exclusive economic zone of another country.

Courtney Welcomes Historic Museum Exhibit Commemorating NR-1 Submarine

GROTON—Today, Congressman Joe Courtney attended the unveiling of the NR-1 at the Submarine Force Library and Museum in Groton. The exhibit commemorates the deep submergence research vehicle NR-1, which was personally championed by Admiral Hyman Rickover, built by Electric Boat, entered service in 1969 and was stationed at Submarine Base New London.
