WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today released the following statement after he and a bipartisan majority of the House of Representatives voted to pass the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), 286-138:

"Today's vote is a huge victory for the American people, as it finally sends a bipartisan compromise VAWA bill to the president for his signature. Eighty-seven Republican House Members today joined every single Democratic Member to pass this overdue, essential bill that will protect victims and give law enforcement the tools they need to prosecute offenders.

Unless Congress crafts a bipartisan compromise by Friday, the Budget Control Act of 2011 will sequester — or cancel — $85 billion of spending planned for the rest of this year. The cuts would be mindlessly spread across all federal agencies, regardless of priority or need. Activities affecting all Americans would be cut. Everything from the Navy to Head Start will be partially curtailed on an indiscriminate basis. Waiting times at airports will go up, food safety inspections will be limited, aircraft carrier deployments would be curtailed and pre-school slots would be eliminated.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today announced that the House Education and Workforce Committee will next Wednesday hold a hearing on school safety. Courtney, who returned to the committee at the beginning of the 113th Congress, wrote to Chairman John Kline and Ranking Member George Miller in December after the Newtown shooting, calling on the committee to make school safety a priority over the next two years.
