WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today announced that the U.S. Navy is moving forward with repairs to the USS Miami, a Groton-based attack submarine that was damaged in a fire May 23 while undergoing an overhaul at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Maine. Congressman Courtney was notified of the decision today. Although the Navy announced last September a contract for Groton-based Electric Boat to perform repair work, and work actually began soon thereafter, in light of sequestration the future of the project was unclear until today's announcement.

WASHINGTON — Today, Congressmen John Yarmuth (KY-3) and Joe Courtney (CT-2) announced a friendly wager on Tuesday's NCAA Women's National Championship matchup between the University of Louisville Cardinals and the University of Connecticut Huskies.

Each Member is wagering wares native to his District.

If the Cardinals win, Congressman Yarmuth will provide a bottle of Woodford Reserve bourbon and a bucket of KFC. If the Huskies prevail, Congressman Courtney will give his colleague a case of Cottrell beer and a Mystic Pizza.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today introduced legislation to ensure that interest rates on subsidized Stafford student loans for undergraduate students do not dramatically increase this year, locking in the lower rate until July 1, 2015. At introduction, the bill has more than 60 cosponsors.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today announced that his office will be hosting staff office hours across eastern Connecticut to make face-to-face assistance more easily accessible for Second District constituents. In addition to regular, office hours the staff already holds at QVCC, the first Thursday of each month, and Clinton, the third Thursday of every month, office hours are being added in Bolton, East Hampton, Stafford Springs, Suffield, Colchester and Somers.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney and the House of Representatives today passed the Fiscal Year 2013 Continuing Resolution (CR) by a vote of 318-109. The bill, which ensures continued two-per-year submarine production at Electric Boat, heads now to President Obama for his signature.

WASHINGTON, DC – This week, Congressmen Joe Courtney (D-CT), Bill Owens (D-NY), and Richard Hanna (R-NY) introduced legislation (H.R. 1297) to increase access to credit for farmers. Their bill, the "Agricultural Credit Expansion Act," would expand the range of business structures that qualify for loans through the Farm Service Agency (FSA), ensuring more family farms are eligible for a range of financing options to help their operations grow and succeed.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today encouraged eastern Connecticut's aspiring young artists to participate in the 2013 Congressional Art Competition. The competition is open to high school students only, grades 9 through 12, and the winner will be selected at the District Art Show and Competition on Friday May 3. The winner of that competition will have his or her work featured in the United States Capitol along with art from all 435 Congressional Districts.
