“While Congressman Larson and I originally announced that the IRS was going to make this tax relief available late last year, many people are still just learning about the program and the fact that it will be available until 2021,” said Courtney. “Local residents should be aware that the additional three years afforded under this updated guidance we received in February will provide critical time for to make foundation repairs and secure federal tax relief. I would like to thank the Office of the Connecticut Taxpayer Advocate and Congressman John Larson for their participation today.

“Cases of Lyme Disease are especially prevalent in eastern Connecticut, affecting thousands of residents. In fact, the namesake town of Lyme, Connecticut is part of the Second Congressional District that I represent,” Courtney said. “May is National Lyme Disease Awareness Month and I hope this resolution will contribute to the growing public discussion about the treatment and prevention of this disease. As other regions of the country are also experiencing a surge in Lyme Disease cases, I hope this will spur a national effort to raise awareness and provide additional resources to combat this disease, as well as other tickborne illnesses.”

“It is long past time for the federal government to live up to the commitments to relieve our communities of the burdens associated with storing nuclear waste locally. This bipartisan compromise broke through the gridlock in Washington and may finally provide a way out for these communities,” Courtney said.

“Despite repeated confirmation that Iran is following the nuclear deal from UN weapons inspectors on the ground, to the President’s own Secretary of Defense, James Mattis, and our closest allies, President Trump has recklessly decided to pull the U.S. out of the agreement,” said Courtney. “This isolates our nation at the very moment we should be rallying international support to denuclearize North Korea. I will support every option possible in Congress to reconstruct and strengthen the progress we have already made toward keeping nuclear weapons out of Iran’s hands. Unfortunately, the President has seriously undermined that effort today.”

“We had so many great works of art entered into the competition this year, it was clearly a very difficult decision for our judges to choose just one winner. I am very impressed by the level of artistic ability and creativity shown by the young people who took part. It seems like year after year, the works get better and better. After the judges made their evaluation of the entries, I am pleased to announce that Yuefeng Xie of the Norwich Free Academy is the winner for the Second Congressional District. His entry was the standout piece of the night, and we are proud that it will represent eastern Connecticut in the Capitol building for the next year.”

This project has been a long time coming, and when it’s completed, it will greatly expand our freight capacity throughout eastern Connecticut and at the Port of New London. The federal TIGER funding I helped secure proved critical in the effort to leverage matching funds from private industry to get this project underway. These upgrades will allow the Port of New London to expand the amount of freight cargo that can be shipped in and sent out by rail across the region. This development is bound to expand industry and create new jobs across eastern Connecticut as shipping continues to grow.
