“Today’s announcement by the U.S. Department of Labor certifying Trade Adjustment Assistance eligibility for laid-off employees from Crabtree & Evelyn is welcome news,” said Congressman Courtney. “This is an example of this federal law working exactly the way it was intended to, and of a company doing all it can to help its employees restore stability to their lives following an economic downturn."

NORWICH, CT – Today, Representative Joe Courtney (CT-02), a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement on President Trump's declaration of a national emergency and plans to divert critical military construction funding to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.

"I strongly oppose President's announcement that he will misuse emergency powers to divert military construction funding to pay for a border wall. Simply stated, this is not a proper use of the President's authority and will harm rather than strengthen our national security.

“Today’s passage of the Consolidated Appropriations Act is a win for hardworking federal employees, for the Coast Guard, law enforcement officials, the environment, and more,” said Congressman Courtney. “I’m particularly pleased that today’s funding package restored the 1.9% pay increase to federal employees that President Trump tried to eliminate on December 28, and that it took another step towards helping folks in eastern Connecticut who are affected by the crumbling foundation's crisis."

“Today’s announcement by the U.S. Department of Labor certifying laid-off Garbo Lobster employees for Trade Adjustment Assistance is a great victory for the men and women who were impacted the mass layoff on January 17,” said Congressman Courtney. “It is particularly impressive because it was the workers, not the employer, who initiated this certification from the Department of Labor, which is extremely unusual."

“Congress took another important step today to help folks affected by crumbling foundations and to acknowledge this crisis on the federal,” said Congressman Courtney. “Two provisions that Congressman John Larson and I authored on this issue were included in today’s Consolidated Appropriations Act, the final conference agreement to fund the government through the end of the fiscal year."

The American people have made it extremely clear that health care affordability is the number one issue facing their families, and they expect Congress to put forward real solutions,” said Congressman Courtney. “In crafting this proposal, we have listened to our constituents, many of whom are over age 50 and facing premiums that easily reach over a thousand dollars per month."

“The passing of Congressman Walter Jones of North Carolina is a sad day for our nation, and for the U.S. Congress,” said Congressman Courtney. “I worked with Walter across the aisle as Members of the House Armed Services Committee for twelve years. He was a devoted public servant, and a gentleman who set a great example for how all Members of Congress should conduct themselves in Washington. His memory will be long-lasting for all of us who observed his service, and it is my hope that his legislative priorities will continue to have an influence on this year’s defense authorization bill.”

“The state of Connecticut lost a great patriot today with the passing of Frank ‘Mick’ O’Beirne,” said Congressman Courtney. “He was a decorated Captain in the U.S. Navy and tireless volunteer for Team Connecticut in 1995 and 2005 in the successful efforts to block Navy BRAC closings at Naval Submarine Base New London. His legacy to the region will live on for generations.”
