Rep. Courtney Statement on Senate’s Vote to Abandon Truncated Impeachment Trial
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02) released the following statement after the Senate voted to acquit President Trump on two articles of impeachment:
"After having voted three times against Privileged Motions for impeachment in the House dating back to 2017, I voted my conscience when I joined the House on December 18, 2019 in referring two articles of impeachment pertaining to the President's actions in Ukraine to the Senate Chamber," said Congressman Courtney. "The House did its job to uphold the rule of law, and to defend the Constitution. Meanwhile, the Senate – for the first time in US history as it pertains to both judges and presidents – held an impeachment trial without calling a single witness, even willing appointees of the President who had direct knowledge about the subject matter at hand. The Senate Majority has butchered the Article One powers of the Congress, and has created a dangerous shift of power to the Executive Branch that will haunt our nation for years to come."
