Rep. Courtney Statement on President Trump’s Plan to Slash Social Security Administration

February 28, 2025

NORWICH, CT – Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02) issued the following statement regarding reports that the Social Security Administration is shutting down offices and firing critical staff.

“The dedicated workforce at Social Security Administration field offices across the nation help seniors, people with disabilities, and survivors whose parents have died access the benefits they are owed. President Trump’s plan to fire 50% of the Administration’s workforce is an attack on Americans’ earned benefits and would completely degrade the critical services communities need.

“A workforce cut would also undoubtedly delay the benefits promised to the millions of public servants after Congress repealed the GPO and WEP through the Social Security Fairness Act. The bill—which I championed since my first term in Congress – was a triumph for millions of teachers, fire fighters, police officers, and other public servants. Any further delay to their earned benefits is a slap in the face.”
