Rep. Courtney Statement on Announced Agreement Between the Government of Afghanistan and the Taliban Regime

February 29, 2020
Press Release

NORWICH, CT – Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02), a Senior Member of the House Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement today after the White House announced the impending signing of a peace agreement between the Government of Afghanistan and the Taliban regime:

“American soldiers have fought for nearly nineteen years to bring to justice the terrorists responsible for the September 11, 2001 attacks on our nation, and to create a stable region, supported by NATO and regional allies, to ensure Afghanistan will not revert to the failed state that became a haven for terrorism,” said Congressman Courtney. “I represent a district that is home to so many of the men and women who have fought this war, and who are there now, still waging the fight. The White House’s announcement provides hope that a deal is close at-hand for peace between the government of Afghanistan and the Taliban regime. I congratulate our American envoys, the leaders of our Armed Forces, and the Trump Administration for the progress they have made thus far in brokering a lasting peace for a new, free Afghanistan, and I look forward to learning more details about this possible agreement as more information becomes available.”
