Rep. Courtney Pushes New Legislation to Stop Elon Musk from Invading Connecticut Residents’ Private Information
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Joe Courtney (CT-02) joined House Democrats to introduce the Taxpayer Data Protection Act following Elon Musk's and DOGE's unprecedented access to American’s most sensitive information housed at the Treasury Department.
If passed, the Taxpayer Data Protection Act will curb corruption and protect privacy by ensuring that only trusted public servants without conflicts of interest and with appropriate security clearances can access the Treasury Department’s most sensitive systems.
"Today, I became an original co-sponsor of the Taxpayer Data Protection Act, which is a measure to put serious safeguards around the Treasury Department to ensure taxpayers’ private information is protected from Elon Musk and individuals that have no business accessing your private information,” said Courtney.
On Thursday, a federal judge temporarily blocked DOGE from obtaining access to certain Treasury Department payment records. That said, Courtney stated the order does not go far enough and legislation is still needed.
“The bill we have written and introduced in Congress is far superior to that order. It is imperative that Congress, as a separate, co-equal branch of government, do its job and make sure that the privacy rights of every American is protected.”
