Rep. Courtney: Lead, Follow, or Get Out of the Way

September 26, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, five days until the federal government shuts down, Rep. Joe Courtney went to the House Floor to urge bipartisan action to ensure federal workers and servicemembers receive pay without interruption and Americans have sustained access to the services they rely on.

“Eastern Connecticut residents remember the pop-up food pantries in New London during the 2019 government shutdown and the financial consequences the shutdown had on servicemembers and their families.

“This potential shutdown is total unnecessary, unfair, and will wreak havoc across the country. There is a pathway, there is a road map. And we know that because at the end of the May when we passed the Fiscal Responsibility Act, which avoided a default on the full faith and credit of this country, Democrats and Republicans came together to pass the measure 314-117. We came together to avoid a default, and we must do it again to avoid a shutdown and do the work for the American people.

“Mister Speaker, as we approach the deadline, lawmakers should be thinking about an old military saying: lead, follow, or get out of the way.”
