Momentum in the Submarine Industrial Base: Rep. Courtney Applauds 200+ Graduating Students Joining the Workforce

June 11, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, on the House Floor, Rep. Joe Courtney applauded the 200+ graduating students across New England who have recently signed on to rewarding careers at submarine contractor Electric Boat and local businesses across Connecticut.

The celebratory signing days and graduations from both career and technical schools and traditional K-12 schools are another signal of the growing momentum across the submarine industrial base. As Rep. Courtney highlights in his remarks, the result of successful and popular skills-training programs is tangible:

“Mr. Speaker, our submarine industrial base is picking up the pace of production….5,300 hires last year with 8[8]% retention, 5,200 hires on track for this year with 90% retention, and five attack submarines to be delivered over a two-and-a-half-year period,” Courtney said.

On May 7, Norwich Technical High School in Norwich, CT hosted its annual signing day where 49 students committed to jobs or post-secondary education. This included 10 students who signed offers from Electric Boat.

Then, on May 29, Electric Boat hosted its third annual signing day where over 200 students from across New England inked their plans to begin a career in the shipyard.
