ICYMI: Rep. Courtney, Seniors Tell Musk to Keep His Hands off Americans’ Hard-Earned Benefits
NORWICH, CT – Yesterday, Rep. Joe Courtney (CT-02) held a town hall in Old Saybrook and a rally outside the New London Social Security Administration office with over 100 concerned residents to demand the Trump Administration and Elon Musk’s DOGE keeps their hands off Americans’ hard-earned Social Security benefits.
Yesterday’s actions in southeastern Connecticut were part of a nationwide effort to save Social Security from the Administration’s ongoing cuts and attacks on the SSA, which include the closure of six of the ten regional Social Security offices across the country and 7,000 job losses. These extreme cuts have led to worse service for beneficiaries, including long waits and website crashes, which will prevent Americans from receiving the benefits they paid for throughout their working years.
“Over the last ninety days my office has received an avalanche of calls from people who are terrified watching what Elon Musk’s DOGE is doing to the Social Security system. If you listen to Elon Musk and you see what DOGE is doing, there is a clear effort to harm Social Security. Eastern Connecticut has the largest number of beneficiaries – 164,000 people – compared to the rest of the state and we will not standby and let that happen,” said Courtney.
Rep. Courtney has fought tooth and nail to save Social Security. Yesterday marked his third senior town hall since January 20, 2025 where he has heard directly from seniors and shared his work in Washington to stop Elon Musk’s assault on Social Security. Courtney is pushing to pass legislation to prohibit the closure of SSA field offices, like the one in New London, and protect Americans’ private Social Security information from DOGE and political appointees.
