ICYMI on Fox: Momentum in the Submarine Industrial Base

June 13, 2024

“Congressman Courtney has been working for weeks now to not only keep up the procurement pace at Electric Boat, but to potentially add even more jobs.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Last night, Connecticut’s Fox 61 highlighted the hiring surge taking place at Electric Boat to meet the demands of the Virginia Class and Columbia Class programs, and Congressman Courtney’s work to maintain a steady demand signal.

Last year, Electric Boat hired 5,300 workers and is on track to hire another 5,200 this year. Newport News Shipbuilding has also seen an employment surge with over 8,200 new employees joining the shipyard in 2022 and 2023.

See data on the growth taking place across the submarine industrial base here.

Watch the clip here.

Fox 61 Anchors: Two hundred new high school graduates are already starting careers at Electric Boat. Yeah, they're coming from all across New England, but the majority are from here in Connecticut. Take a look at these students from Grasso Tech and other local schools. Contracts have been signed getting these seniors training and good salaries right away working at the Groton Shipyard. General Dynamics, their parent company, has been frantically hiring as the Navy continues to procure more submarines from them, especially since the AUKUS security agreement.

Congressman Joe Courtney spoke on the House floor about just how many jobs they filled and how many they still have open.

Rep. Courtney: 5300 hires last year with 8[8]% retention. 5200 hires on track for this year with 90% retention. Five attack submarines to be delivered over a two and a half year period. It is a great testament to the American worker.

Fox 61 Anchors: Congressman Courtney has been working for weeks now to not only keep up the procurement pace at Electric Boat, but to potentially add even more jobs. It all comes down to the annual National Defense Bill, which Connecticut Senators have confirmed to Fox 61 they are hoping to finalize in their chambers this week.
