WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today announced that the Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT) has secured a $10 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The competitive funding will be used by the eight Connecticut Transit Divisions and for the Southeast Area Transit district (SEAT) to replace fare boxes and associated equipment. Congressman Courtney wrote to U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood supporting ConnDOT's application.

"I believe that a more stable, accessible transit system is good for our entire state," Courtney wrote to LaHood. "Study after study shows a positive correlation between economic development and proximity to bus rapid transit stations. Connecticut citizens and businesses, alike, will benefit from this targeted investment in infrastructure."

The competitive grant was secured through FTA's FY 2012 State of Good Repair Program, which ensures the reliability and safety of public transportation systems.

"This critical funding will ensure greater efficiency in southeastern Connecticut's transit system," said Congressman Courtney. "Better, more reliable equipment on our buses will provide a more desirable means of transportation for our region as people travel back and forth between home, work and school. With gas prices still high, affordable, reliable transportation options are essential."
