Courtney, Walorski Put Local Favorites on the Line in National Championship Wager
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Reps. Joe Courtney (CT-2) and Jackie Walorski (IN-2) announced today the details of a friendly wager over tonight’s national championship game between the women’s basketball teams from Notre Dame University and the University of Connecticut. As Members of Congress who represent the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the University of Connecticut Huskies, and passionate fans of their hometown teams, they are competing for bragging rights.
If Notre Dame wins, Rep. Courtney will have to hand over a gift basket of eastern Connecticut signature treats including Munson’s Chocolates, Selbuort Valley Farms Maple Syrup, Cato Corner Cheese, Deep River Chips, Jarmoc cigars and Cottrell Beer. If Connecticut wins, Rep. Walorski will provide Courtney with treats from Indiana’s own South Bend Chocolate Company® from South Bend, Wakarusa Dime Store® jelly beans, and Amish jam.
“Coach Geno Auriemma and the UConn women’s basketball team are a force to be reckoned with, and this year is no exception,” Courtney said. “Notre Dame may be the toughest opponent yet, but UConn, with the senior leadership of Stefanie Dolson and Bria Hartley and the inside-outside threat of Breanna Stewart, is ready to claim a record ninth national championship title. After last night’s victory for Coach Ollie and the men’s team, I think we are heading for another dual championship year!”
“Tonight’s national championship game is historic – both teams are undefeated and they should be congratulated for their hard work. Notre Dame has had an impressive season, they’re undefeated and have beaten UConn seven of the last nine times they’ve played, and I’m confident tonight we’ll add another win to that list,” Walorski said. “As we celebrate another Hoosier victory tonight, I look forward to enjoying the cheeses, syrup and chocolate from Rep. Courtney. Go Irish!”
The UConn Huskies are in contention for their ninth national championship title since 1995, which would put UConn alone at the top of the all-time women’s NCAA basketball championships list. After the UConn men’s victory against Kentucky last night, Rep. Andy Barr (KY-6) will make good on his wager with an assortment of signature bourbons, candies, and treats.
