Courtney, Sullivan, Durbin, Gallagher Host Prime Minister Albanese for Meeting with Congressional Leaders, Members
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Friends of Australia Caucus, led by Reps. Joe Courtney and Mike Gallagher, and Sens. Dan Sullivan and Dick Durbin, hosted Prime Minister Albanese of Australia for a breakfast meeting with House and Senate Committee leaders on Armed Services and Foreign Affairs. This was an opportunity for top Congressional leaders with jurisdiction over different parts of the AUKUS mission to have a dialogue with the Prime Minister on efforts to execute the trilateral security agreement.
Following the meeting, the Co-Chairs hosted over 60 members of the House and Senate for a reception to hear directly from and meet the Prime Minister.
“Prime Minister Albanese’s trip to Capitol Hill was critical in emphasizing the importance of the AUKUS enabling legislation that came out of the ‘Optimal Pathway’, which was announced by the three heads of government last March. As Prime Minister Albanese said in this morning’s meeting, there’s a true bipartisan commitment to AUKUS in Australia. The strong showing of Members from both parties across the House and Senate, as well as Committee leaders responsible for advancing AUKUS legislation, underscores that there is also a strong bipartisan commitment in the U.S. Congress to execute this vital security agreement. I look forward to building on the momentum that was very clear this morning and advance enabling legislation through this year’s National Defense Authorization Act,” Rep. Joe Courtney said (D-CT).

Today’s meeting demonstrated the bipartisan and bicameral support for building on the successes of this alliance by taking steps to enhance our submarine industrial base for our subsea goals and reform ITAR. We have no more trustworthy nor capable ally than our mates in Australia and must move with a sense of urgency to ensure the AUKUS framework has the tools and resources it needs to reach the next level,” Rep.
