Courtney statement on vote to avert another Republican government shutdown

September 30, 2015

WASHINGTON—Today Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-2) released the following statement after voting to pass a short-term Continuing Resolution to fund the government:

“Today, Congress narrowly avoided another Republican government shutdown while intensifying the looming budget cliff in December—sending us into yet another cycle of manufactured crises. This ongoing failure to seek consensus on long-term government funding bills is bad for our economy and bad for democracy.

“In the coming months, I urge House Republican leadership to set aside internal squabbles and put our nation’s interests first. They should come to the table with Congressional Democrats, who have provided the votes to reopen the government, avoid default, and protect military families and federal workers from shutdown impacts. The CR passed today with unanimous support from Democrats, while incredibly, 151 Republicans voted to shut the government down for the second time since 2013.

"It is long past time to work together to pass long-term legislation to fund our government and strengthen our economy."
