Courtney Statement on U.S. Navy Report Regarding the Fire Onboard USS Bonhomme Richard
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02), Chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower and Projection Forces, made the following statement today regarding the U.S. Navy’s command investigation into the facts and circumstances surrounding the July 12, 2020 fire onboard the USS Bonhomme Richard in San Diego, CA.
“Today, my colleagues and I received the first round of documents from the U.S. Navy’s command investigation into the devastating fire onboard the USS Bonhomme Richard. Based on the initial reading, this three-billion-dollar loss to the American taxpayer was largely preventable if the Navy and their private contractors had even a bare level of training and the necessary equipment to combat the blaze. As it stands, however, we learned that it took two full hours for the first drop of liquid to begin suppression—a stunning revelation that now requires extensive oversight, which we intend to conduct immediately.”
