Courtney Statement on Supreme Court Ruling in Favor of Marriage Equality

WASHINGTON—Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-2) released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s ruling to strike down state bans on same-sex marriage:

“This ruling is an historic step for equality, fairness, and civil rights in our country, and we celebrate alongside the millions of people who have worked tirelessly to build a groundswell of public support over the past decades. This is a landmark decision that places the court and the country on the right side of history—the side of equality and love. Connecticut took this step forward for our residents sanctioning marriage equality in 2008, and our state’s experience shows that this decision is going to become part of the American social fabric quickly and smoothly.

“All Americans deserve equal protection under the law, and we still have hills to climb to ensure that LGBT Americans cannot be discriminated against in the workplace or denied other rights and benefits. For today, advocates and allies who have worked to advance this cause should pause to reflect on this momentous achievement.”
