Courtney Statement on President Obama's State of the Union Address

January 20, 2015
WASHINGTON--Tonight, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-2) released the following statement after President Obama delivered his 2015 State of the Union Address:
"Tonight President Obama gave voice to the millions of middle class Americans who are looking to gain a bigger share of the benefit of our economic recovery--a share that has been too meager to date. In this speech, the President laid out clear steps we can take to help middle class workers buy a home, send their children to college, save for retirement, and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with financial security.
"I am particularly pleased to see a strong focus on educating high school and college students to perform the high-skilled, good-paying jobs that are growing in our region. With last week's announcement that Electric Boat will hire 600 workers this year--including hundreds of engineers--the need to expand access to technical and engineering degrees is crucial. Recent federal and state investments in eastern Connecticut's community colleges to implement manufacturing technology training programs at every campus are a major step in the right direction.
"I stand ready to work together with my colleagues in Congress to build on the progress we have made during the economic recovery, and ensure that growth benefits everyone--not just the wealthiest among us."
