Courtney Statement on President Biden’s Announced Sanctions Against Pro-Moscow Territories in Ukraine

NORWICH, CT – Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02), Chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower and Projection Forces, released the following statement today regarding President Joe Biden's announcement that he will sign an executive order imposing new economic sanctions against two pro-Russian territories in Ukraine that that Russian President Vladimir Putin illegitimately recognized as "independent". President Biden's executive order will "prohibit new investment, trade, and financing by U.S. persons to, from, or in the so-called DNR and LNR regions of Ukraine," according to a statement from the White House. "Autocrat Putin's pathetically scripted decision to seize the Donbass and Luhansk regions of Eastern Ukraine is a brazen violation of international law that displaces an even larger population of Ukrainian citizens than before," said Rep. Courtney. "I support the swift decision of the U.S. and EU allies to harshly sanction this annexation. The civilized world cannot and should not look the other way while the port city of Mariupol is swallowed up by this tyrant. The UN Security Council should convene immediately as the Ukrainian government has requested."
Announced sanctions from the Biden Administration come alongside forthcoming sanctions from the European Union and from the United Kingdom.
