Courtney Statement on Passage of Full Year DHS Funding

March 3, 2015
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-2) released the following statement after voting in favor of the Senate’s bill to fully fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for the 2015 fiscal year:
“Speaker Boehner and House Republican leadership hopefully learned an important lesson today: the American people will not tolerate the hostage-taking strategies extremists in the House Republican caucus have repeatedly employed over the last four years to advance policies they cannot enact through regular order.
“The vote today, which passed with universal support from House Democrats while two-thirds of Republicans voted ‘no,’ is a signal to Speaker Boehner that the path forward to govern responsibly is to work with Democrats to build bipartisan coalitions. Caving to the extreme wing of his conference will only lead to more threats of shutdown, default, and self-inflicted wounds to our economy. I stand ready to work on a bipartisan basis to ensure that we fulfill our responsibilities to the country.”
