Courtney Statement on One-Year Anniversary of Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine

February 24, 2023

NORWICH, CT – Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02), Ranking Member of the Seapower Subcommittee and the second most senior Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, made the following statement on the one-year anniversary of Russia’s lawless invasion of Ukraine:

“When Russia began its invasion of Ukraine one year ago, most around the world doubted Ukraine’s ability to defend itself,” said Rep. Courtney. “But the Ukrainian people have defied that conventional wisdom every step of the way—they’ve outperformed and out-thought Putin’s army with masterful logistics and relentless courage. Now, at the one-year mark since Russia’s brutal and unprovoked invasion, intelligence suggests that Putin is mounting another offensive. The military and humanitarian assistance that America provided to our partners in Ukraine has been critical to their defense so far, but cracks seem to be appearing in Congress over our continued commitment. That’s exactly what Putin is counting on, and we can’t let our resolve falter. Mine will not.”
