Courtney Statement on HealthyCT Proposed Rate Reduction

July 26, 2013

Washington—Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-2) released the following statement after HealthyCT, a new nonprofit insurer, re-filed lower 2014 health insurance premiums with the Connecticut Insurance Department. HealthyCT will be one option for coverage available to consumers in Connecticut’s health insurance exchange next fall.

“Just like in Oregon, increased transparency and a standard level of benefits in our state health insurance exchange have created competition among insurers that will benefit individuals, families and small businesses,” Courtney said. “This development confirms that the health insurance exchanges will introduce incentives to lower prices, putting consumers in the driver’s seat when it comes to making health care decisions.”

The new filing shows a 36 percent reduction in proposed premiums for an individual market HealthyCT plan, from an average rate of $427 per month to $271 per month. For small group plans, the proposed rate dropped from an average of $446 to $408.
