Courtney Statement on Federal Judge Ruling to Ban Mifepristone

April 11, 2023

NORWICH, CT – Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02) issued the following statement in response to Texas U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk’s recent ruling to suspend longstanding FDA approval of mifepristone.

“The decision to rescind FDA’S 23-year-old approval for mifepristone for no good reason is blatantly wrong and if upheld, will undoubtedly result in worse health outcomes for women. Experts, doctors, and manufacturers of other medications have made it clear that this unprecedented decision flies in the face of the scientific process and established medical facts. Over 400 pharmaceutical manufacturers that produce other medications have signed onto a letter correctly pointing out that it undermines the entire FDA approval process – putting access to medications like insulin, vaccines, and drugs to treat Alzheimer’s into alarming uncertainty,” Courtney said. “This is another reminder of the urgent need to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act and ensure access to safe reproductive care nationwide. I’m glad the Biden Administration has appealed Judge Kasmaryk's decision and I urge it to be overturned for patient safety and to restore stability to our healthcare system.”
