Courtney Statement on the Dismantling of Key Department of Education Programs
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Joe Courtney, a senior member of the House Education and Workforce Committee, released the following statement in response to U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon outsourcing the Department of Education’s Office of Early Childhood Education, Office of Post Secondary Education, and more programs that students and families rely on to other government agencies.
“Today’s dismantling of key Department of Education programs is another step in President Trump’s and Education Secretary McMahon’s plan to abolish the Department and decimate critical services to our nation’s school districts,” Courtney said. "Make no mistake, this plan is illegal. Abolishing the Department of Education will set America’s schools back, is not supported by the American people, and as seen in today’s announcement, will actively disrupt federal programs that connect students to the life skills they need to succeed. The Department was created by an act of Congress in 1979, and it will take an act of Congress to abolish it. As a member of the House Education and Workforce Committee, I will not stop fighting to protect students and keep education as a national priority.”
