Courtney statement after Obama speech on S&P downgrade

August 8, 2011

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today released the following statement after President Obama's speech on the S&P downgrade:

"As I stated on the floor of the House of Representatives two weeks ago, a comprehensive package of deficit reduction was needed to avoid not only default, but downgrade. I agree with the President that the United States is still a triple-A nation, and we need to build on that strength to rescue its future. A balanced plan to reduce our debt will help our nation grow and dispel any doubts about our fundamental strength.

"Ultimately, the best answer to our budget challenges is still to do all we can to spur economic recovery through job creation."
