Courtney statement after casting YES vote on Reid compromise bill to end default crisis

July 30, 2011
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today released the following statement after voting "yes" on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's compromise plan to end the default crisis:

"Like any compromise that includes Democratic and Republican ideas, Senator Reid's bill is not perfect; however, it accomplishes what Speaker Boehner's plan would not. It protects seniors, Social Security and Medicare, and it maintains critical investment in Pell Grants that are helping students across eastern Connecticut go to college. Most importantly, Senator Reid's bill – the only bipartisan option before Congress – provides long-term peace of mind to families and financial markets by ensuring that we are not engaged in this divisive, unnecessary debate just six months from now. Resolving this crisis today will allow us to return our focus where it is needed the most: to job creation."
